What DIY Car Maintenance can I do myself?

As a car owner, you probably know how important it is to keep up with the basic repairs your car requires from time to time. You have to ensure that your vehicle is kept up to date so that it can run properly without making you stop in the middle of the street.

Although many of the car repairs require a certified professional like a mechanic to perform repairs, there’s some maintenance that you can do yourself for very little or no cost at all! The following is a small review:

DIY Checklist- Car Service

The mechanic should do some of the complicated repairs like the replacement of a timing belt or the water pump only but there are a number of not-so-complicated repairs that you can do easily do at home.

They not only save you a good amount of money but alongside provide you the benefit of understanding how you can keep your car running in the best condition. Let us take a look at some basic maintenance DIY’s.

1- Changing/Replacing the battery

Car batteries should be changed at least once because they usually last around five to seven years. Although changing the battery will require some legwork, you will be saving the money a mechanic will require for servicing your car. One thing you need to take into consideration is that you have to remain extra precautions when handling battery cables as improper handling could result in you getting an electric shock.

2- Replacing/Changing the air filter

Changing the air filter, whether the one in the cabin or the engine, proves to be an easy task that can easily be done at home. Most of the mechanics charge a service fee for changing the filters but all you need to do is purchase a new one and replace it with the previous one. 

3-Tire Pressure

In case you fail to keep the tire pressure up to date, the safety of your vehicle is at a very high risk. A pen style gauge can be easily purchased for only a few dollars and it is an easy process.  

Basic Fluid Changes to do yourself

1- Changing the engine oil

Depending on the kind of vehicle you own, you have to change the oil after it has run from 3000 to 10,000 miles. A mechanic will usually charge some amount of money but as it proves to be an easy and simple process, it can be done at home.

2- Changing other fluids

Similarly, you can easily replace the other fluids that a car engine requires to run efficiently.

The Bottom Line

By doing some of these basic repairs from home, you can save a considerable amount of money. Not only that, but you will be able to better understand your car like never before. Although sometimes, consulting a mechanic proves to be necessary.
